This family encodes type II membrane-bound glycoproteins with diverse enzymatic functions using different donor substrates (UDP-galactose and UDP-N-acetylglucosamine) and different acceptor sugars (N-acetylglucosamine, galactose, N-acetylgalactosamine). The beta3GalT genes are distantly related to the Drosophila Brainiac gene and have the protein coding sequence contained in a single exon. The beta3GalT proteins also contain conserved sequences not found in the beta4GalT or alpha3GalT proteins. The carbohydrate chains synthesized by these enzymes are designated as type 1, whereas beta4GalT enzymes synthesize type 2 carbohydrate chains. The ratio of type 1:type 2 chains changes during embryogenesis. By sequence similarity, the beta3GalT genes fall into at least two groups: beta3GalT4 and 4 other beta3GalT genes (beta3GalT1-3, beta3GalT5). This gene encodes a protein that functions in N-linked glycoprotein glycosylation and shows strict donor substrate specificity for UDP-galactose. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Beta-1,3-galactosyltransferase that transfers galactose from UDP-galactose to substrates with a terminal beta-N- acetylglucosamine (beta-GlcNAc) residue. Can also utilize substrates with a terminal galactose residue, albeit with lower efficiency. Involved in the biosynthesis of the carbohydrate moieties of glycolipids and glycoproteins. Inactive towards substrates with terminal alpha-N-acetylglucosamine (alpha-GlcNAc) or alpha-N-acetylgalactosamine (alpha-GalNAc) residues. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:9417100, ECO:0000269|PubMed:9582303}. |Galactosyl T| |glucosaminylgalactosylglucosylceramide beta-galactosyltransferase activity| |galactosylceramide biosynthetic process| |galactolipid biosynthetic process| |glycosylceramide biosynthetic process| |UDP-galactose:beta-N-acetylglucosamine beta-1,3-galactosyltransferase activity| |galactosylceramide metabolic process| |galactolipid metabolic process| |oligosaccharide biosynthetic process| |glycosylceramide metabolic process| |acetylgalactosaminyltransferase activity| |glycosphingolipid biosynthetic process| |ceramide biosynthetic process| |oligosaccharide metabolic process| |glycolipid biosynthetic process| |glycosphingolipid metabolic process| |protein N-linked glycosylation| |ceramide metabolic process| |sphingolipid biosynthetic process| |glycolipid metabolic process| |liposaccharide metabolic process| |carbohydrate biosynthetic process| |membrane lipid biosynthetic process| |sphingolipid metabolic process| |membrane lipid metabolic process| |protein glycosylation| |macromolecule glycosylation| |glycosylation| |glycoprotein biosynthetic process| |glycoprotein metabolic process| |carbohydrate metabolic process| |amide biosynthetic process| |lipid biosynthetic process| |carbohydrate derivative biosynthetic process| |Golgi membrane| |cellular amide metabolic process| |cellular lipid metabolic process| |Golgi apparatus| |endoplasmic reticulum| |carbohydrate derivative metabolic process| |lipid metabolic process| |organonitrogen compound biosynthetic process| |cellular nitrogen compound biosynthetic process| |cellular macromolecule biosynthetic process| |macromolecule biosynthetic process| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp46|HMS-I1 1μM R01 exp46]]|-1.85| |[[:results:exp412|THZ531 0.11 to 0.125 to 0.35μM on day4 then day6 R07 exp412]]|1.7| |[[:results:exp334|All-trans-Retinoic-Acid 40μM R07 exp334]]|1.77| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
