Ligands of this family bind various TGF-beta receptors leading to recruitment and activation of SMAD family transcription factors that regulate gene expression. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate subunits of a disulfide-linked homodimer, or alternatively, a heterodimer, with the related protein, growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9). This protein plays a role in oocyte maturation and follicular development, through activation of granulosa cells. Defects in this gene are the cause of ovarian dysgenesis and are associated with premature ovarian failure. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2016]. * **UniProt Summary**: May be involved in follicular development. Oocyte- specific growth/differentiation factor that stimulates folliculogenesis and granulosa cell (GC) growth. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18227435}. |TGF beta| |granulosa cell development| |granulosa cell differentiation| |transforming growth factor beta receptor binding| |positive regulation of pathway-restricted SMAD protein phosphorylation| |ovarian follicle development| |SMAD protein signal transduction| |regulation of pathway-restricted SMAD protein phosphorylation| |female gonad development| |BMP signaling pathway| |development of primary female sexual characteristics| |positive regulation of transmembrane receptor protein serine/threonine kinase signaling pathway| |response to BMP| |cellular response to BMP stimulus| |female sex differentiation| |female gamete generation| |growth factor activity| |cytokine activity| |epithelial cell development| |transmembrane receptor protein serine/threonine kinase signaling pathway| |gonad development| |development of primary sexual characteristics| |regulation of transmembrane receptor protein serine/threonine kinase signaling pathway| |sex differentiation| |endoplasmic reticulum lumen| |post-translational protein modification| |reproductive structure development| |reproductive system development| |cellular response to growth factor stimulus| |response to growth factor| |developmental process involved in reproduction| |epithelial cell differentiation| |gamete generation| |enzyme linked receptor protein signaling pathway| |regulation of MAPK cascade| |multicellular organismal reproductive process| |sexual reproduction| |multicellular organism reproduction| |multi-organism reproductive process| |positive regulation of protein phosphorylation| |positive regulation of phosphorylation| |epithelium development| |positive regulation of phosphate metabolic process| |positive regulation of phosphorus metabolic process| |cellular response to endogenous stimulus| |positive regulation of protein modification process| |reproductive process| |reproduction| |regulation of protein phosphorylation| |response to endogenous stimulus| |positive regulation of transcription, DNA-templated| |regulation of apoptotic process| |regulation of programmed cell death| |regulation of phosphorylation| |extracellular space| |positive regulation of cellular protein metabolic process| |positive regulation of nucleic acid-templated transcription| |positive regulation of RNA biosynthetic process| |cell development| |positive regulation of signal transduction| |regulation of cell death| |positive regulation of protein metabolic process| |positive regulation of RNA metabolic process| |tissue development| |regulation of phosphate metabolic process| |regulation of phosphorus metabolic process| |positive regulation of cell communication| |positive regulation of signaling| |regulation of intracellular signal transduction| |regulation of protein modification process| |positive regulation of nucleobase-containing compound metabolic process| |positive regulation of macromolecule biosynthetic process| |positive regulation of cellular biosynthetic process| |positive regulation of gene expression| |positive regulation of biosynthetic process| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp520|Rucaparib 6.5μM R08 exp520]]|-2.19| |[[:results:exp484|GSK-J5 1.5μM R08 exp484]]|1.7| |[[:results:exp471|Cholesterol 0.003 to 0.006 to 0.1μM on day2 then day6 R08 exp471]]|1.74| |[[:results:exp493|IL-3 9ng/ml R08 exp493]]|1.77| |[[:results:exp474|CR131-b 0.005μM R08 exp474]]|2.11| |[[:results:exp389|PF-06409577 20μM R07 exp389]]|2.31| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
