This gene encodes a multifunctional enzyme that catalyzes 2,3-DPG synthesis via its synthetase activity, and 2,3-DPG degradation via its phosphatase activity. The enzyme also has phosphoglycerate phosphomutase activity. Deficiency of this enzyme increases the affinity of cells for oxygen. Mutations in this gene result in hemolytic anemia. Multiple alternatively spliced variants, encoding the same protein, have been identified. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]. * **UniProt Summary**: Plays a major role in regulating hemoglobin oxygen affinity by controlling the levels of its allosteric effector 2,3- bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG). Also exhibits mutase (EC 5.4.2.1) activity. |His Phos 1| |bisphosphoglycerate mutase activity| |phosphoglycerate mutase activity| |NADH regeneration| |glucose catabolic process to pyruvate| |canonical glycolysis| |glycolytic process through fructose-6-phosphate| |glycolytic process through glucose-6-phosphate| |glucose catabolic process| |erythrocyte development| |NADH metabolic process| |glycolytic process| |respiratory gaseous exchange by respiratory system| |ATP generation from ADP| |NAD metabolic process| |ADP metabolic process| |hexose catabolic process| |myeloid cell development| |nucleoside diphosphate phosphorylation| |purine ribonucleoside diphosphate metabolic process| |nucleotide phosphorylation| |monosaccharide catabolic process| |purine nucleoside diphosphate metabolic process| |ribonucleoside diphosphate metabolic process| |pyruvate metabolic process| |hydrolase activity| |erythrocyte differentiation| |nucleoside diphosphate metabolic process| |erythrocyte homeostasis| |myeloid cell homeostasis| |glucose metabolic process| |carbohydrate catabolic process| |hexose metabolic process| |homeostasis of number of cells| |monosaccharide metabolic process| |ATP metabolic process| |myeloid cell differentiation| |purine ribonucleotide metabolic process| |ribonucleotide metabolic process| |purine nucleotide metabolic process| |ribose phosphate metabolic process| |purine-containing compound metabolic process| |generation of precursor metabolites and energy| |small molecule catabolic process| |nucleotide metabolic process| |nucleoside phosphate metabolic process| |carbohydrate metabolic process| |monocarboxylic acid metabolic process| |nucleobase-containing small molecule metabolic process| |hemopoiesis| |hematopoietic or lymphoid organ development| |immune system development| |organophosphate metabolic process| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |oxidation-reduction process| |oxoacid metabolic process| |organic acid metabolic process| |carbohydrate derivative metabolic process| |phosphorylation| |homeostatic process| |cell development| |small molecule metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp358|FK-506 5μM R07 exp358]]|-1.9| |[[:results:exp68|Clomiphene 4.4μM R02 exp68]]|1.7| |[[:results:exp510|Nicotine 3000μM R08 exp510]]|1.82| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
