The protein encoded by this gene is thought to be a scaffolding protein involved in organizing the presynaptic cytoskeleton. The gene is expressed primarily in neurons in the brain. A similar gene product in rodents is concentrated in the active zone of axon terminals and tightly associated with cytoskeletal structures, and is essential for regulating neurotransmitter release from a subset of synapses. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Is thought to be involved in the organization of the cytomatrix at the nerve terminals active zone (CAZ) which regulates neurotransmitter release. Seems to act through binding to ERC2/CAST1. Essential in regulated neurotransmitter release from a subset of brain glutamatergic synapses. Involved in the formation of the retinal photoreceptor ribbon synapses (By similarity). {ECO:0000250}. |zf-piccolo| |presynapse to nucleus signaling pathway| |presynaptic signal transduction| |structural constituent of presynaptic active zone| |maintenance of presynaptic active zone structure| |cytoskeleton of presynaptic active zone| |presynaptic active zone organization| |maintenance of synapse structure| |neuron projection terminus| |excitatory synapse| |presynaptic active zone| |cellular component maintenance| |protein localization to synapse| |GABA-ergic synapse| |synaptic vesicle membrane| |Schaffer collateral - CA1 synapse| |synapse assembly| |regulation of synaptic vesicle cycle| |synaptic vesicle| |postsynaptic density| |synapse organization| |axon| |glutamatergic synapse| |anterograde trans-synaptic signaling| |dendrite| |chemical synaptic transmission| |trans-synaptic signaling| |synaptic signaling| |cell junction| |regulation of vesicle-mediated transport| |cell surface| |regulation of cellular localization| |cell-cell signaling| |regulation of transport| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp133|MKC9989 10μM R03 exp133]]|1.76| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
