These junctions are comprised of sets of continuous networking strands in the outwardly facing cytoplasmic leaflet, with complementary grooves in the inwardly facing extracytoplasmic leaflet. The protein encoded by this intronless gene, a member of the claudin family, is an integral membrane protein and a component of tight junction strands. It is also a low-affinity receptor for Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin, and shares aa sequence similarity with a putative apoptosis-related protein found in rat. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Plays a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space, through calcium- independent cell-adhesion activity. {ECO:0000250}. |PMP22 Claudin| |apicolateral plasma membrane| |calcium-independent cell-cell adhesion via plasma membrane cell-adhesion molecules| |epithelial cell morphogenesis| |bicellular tight junction assembly| |tight junction assembly| |tight junction organization| |apical junction assembly| |lateral plasma membrane| |cell-cell junction assembly| |protein heterooligomerization| |bicellular tight junction| |response to ethanol| |transmembrane signaling receptor activity| |cell-cell junction organization| |cell junction assembly| |structural molecule activity| |epithelial cell development| |cell junction organization| |response to alcohol| |cell-cell adhesion via plasma-membrane adhesion molecules| |response to antibiotic| |protein homooligomerization| |response to hypoxia| |response to decreased oxygen levels| |response to oxygen levels| |cell-cell adhesion| |response to toxic substance| |protein complex oligomerization| |cell morphogenesis involved in differentiation| |epithelial cell differentiation| |cell morphogenesis| |cellular component morphogenesis| |cell adhesion| |biological adhesion| |response to drug| |identical protein binding| |epithelium development| |response to abiotic stimulus| |integral component of plasma membrane| |response to oxygen-containing compound| |protein-containing complex assembly| |cell development| |tissue development| |protein-containing complex subunit organization| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found.
