The encoded protein may play a role in the uronate cycle of glucose metabolism and in the cellular osmoregulation in the proximal renal tubules. Defects in this gene are a cause of pentosuria. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.[provided by RefSeq, Aug 2010]. * **UniProt Summary**: Catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of several pentoses, tetroses, trioses, alpha-dicarbonyl compounds and L- xylulose. Participates in the uronate cycle of glucose metabolism. May play a role in the water absorption and cellular osmoregulation in the proximal renal tubules by producing xylitol, an osmolyte, thereby preventing osmolytic stress from occurring in the renal tubules. |KR| |adh short| |L-xylulose reductase (NAD+) activity| |L-xylulose reductase (NADP+) activity| |D-xylose metabolic process| |xylulose metabolic process| |glucuronate catabolic process| |xylulose 5-phosphate metabolic process| |carbonyl reductase (NADPH) activity| |glucuronate catabolic process to xylulose 5-phosphate| |xylulose 5-phosphate biosynthetic process| |oxidoreductase activity, acting on NAD(P)H, quinone or similar compound as acceptor| |pentose metabolic process| |uronic acid metabolic process| |glucuronate metabolic process| |NADP metabolic process| |brush border| |cytoplasmic microtubule| |monosaccharide catabolic process| |microvillus| |protein homotetramerization| |glucose metabolic process| |monocarboxylic acid catabolic process| |carbohydrate catabolic process| |protein tetramerization| |hexose metabolic process| |monosaccharide metabolic process| |carboxylic acid catabolic process| |organic acid catabolic process| |protein homooligomerization| |small molecule catabolic process| |carbohydrate metabolic process| |protein complex oligomerization| |monocarboxylic acid metabolic process| |organophosphate biosynthetic process| |carbohydrate derivative biosynthetic process| |organophosphate metabolic process| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |oxidation-reduction process| |oxoacid metabolic process| |organic acid metabolic process| |carbohydrate derivative metabolic process| |identical protein binding| |protein-containing complex assembly| |small molecule metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| |cellular catabolic process| |protein-containing complex subunit organization| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found.
