This family transfers an N-acetyl galactosamine to the hydroxyl group of a serine or threonine residue in the first step of O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis. Individual GalNAc-transferases have distinct activities and initiation of O-glycosylation is regulated by a repertoire of GalNAc-transferases. The protein encoded by this gene is highly homologous to other family members, however the enzymes have different substrate specificities. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Catalyzes the initial reaction in O-linked oligosaccharide biosynthesis, the transfer of an N-acetyl-D- galactosamine residue to a serine or threonine residue on the protein receptor. Has activity toward HIV envelope glycoprotein gp120, EA2, Muc2 and Muc5. Probably glycosylates fibronectin in vivo. Glycosylates FGF23. Plays a central role in phosphate homeostasis. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:16638743, ECO:0000269|PubMed:9295285}. |Glycos transf 2| |Ricin B lectin| |protein O-linked glycosylation via threonine| |protein O-linked glycosylation via serine| |polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase activity| |O-glycan processing| |manganese ion binding| |fibroblast growth factor receptor signaling pathway| |peptidyl-threonine modification| |Golgi cisterna membrane| |cellular response to fibroblast growth factor stimulus| |protein O-linked glycosylation| |response to fibroblast growth factor| |carbohydrate binding| |peptidyl-serine modification| |macromolecule glycosylation| |protein glycosylation| |glycosylation| |glycoprotein biosynthetic process| |glycoprotein metabolic process| |carbohydrate metabolic process| |cellular response to growth factor stimulus| |transmembrane receptor protein tyrosine kinase signaling pathway| |response to growth factor| |Golgi membrane| |carbohydrate derivative biosynthetic process| |perinuclear region of cytoplasm| |enzyme linked receptor protein signaling pathway| |calcium ion binding| |peptidyl-amino acid modification| |Golgi apparatus| |carbohydrate derivative metabolic process| |cellular response to endogenous stimulus| |organonitrogen compound biosynthetic process| |response to endogenous stimulus| |cellular macromolecule biosynthetic process| |macromolecule biosynthetic process| |membrane| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp483|FTY720 3μM R08 exp483]]|-1.71| |[[:results:exp535|Trimetrexate 0.03μM R08 exp535]]|1.76| |[[:results:exp94|Nocodazole 0.1μM R03 exp94]]|1.83| |[[:results:exp155|UNC1999 2μM R03 exp155]]|1.9| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
