Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described. A related pseudogene exists on chromosome X. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2009]. * **UniProt Summary**: Required to maintain individual mitotic chromosomes dispersed in the cytoplasm following nuclear envelope disassembly (PubMed:27362226). Associates with the surface of the mitotic chromosome, the perichromosomal layer, and covers a substantial fraction of the chromosome surface (PubMed:27362226). Prevents chromosomes from collapsing into a single chromatin mass by forming a steric and electrostatic charge barrier: the protein has a high net electrical charge and acts as a surfactant, dispersing chromosomes and enabling independent chromosome motility (PubMed:27362226). Binds DNA, with a preference for supercoiled DNA and AT-rich DNA (PubMed:10878551). Does not contribute to the internal structure of mitotic chromosomes (By similarity). May play a role in chromatin organization (PubMed:24867636). It is however unclear whether it plays a direct role in chromatin organization or whether it is an indirect consequence of its function in maintaining mitotic chromosomes dispersed (Probable). {ECO:0000250|UniProtKB:E9PVX6, ECO:0000269|PubMed:10878551, ECO:0000269|PubMed:24867636, ECO:0000269|PubMed:27362226}. |K167R| |FHA| |condensed chromosome| |regulation of chromosome segregation| |regulation of mitotic nuclear division| |regulation of chromatin organization| |protein C-terminus binding| |regulation of nuclear division| |nuclear body| |regulation of chromosome organization| |cell population proliferation| |regulation of mitotic cell cycle| |regulation of cell cycle process| |nucleolus| |regulation of cell cycle| |regulation of organelle organization| |cell cycle| |RNA binding| |DNA binding| |ATP binding| |membrane| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp460|BML-284 0.09μM R08 exp460]]|-2.56| |[[:results:exp217|Mdivi-1 15μM R05 exp217]]|-2.02| |[[:results:exp239|PFI-2 4μM R05 exp239]]|1.74| |[[:results:exp238|Parthenolide 2.5μM R05 exp238]]|1.81| |[[:results:exp159|Docetaxel 0.001 to 0.002μM on day4 R04 exp159]]|1.87| |[[:results:exp170|Metformin 100 to 150μM on day4 R04 exp170]]|1.95| |[[:results:exp390|Pifithrin-alpha 20μM R07 exp390]]|2.07| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
