The encoded protein may play a role in the compaction, stabilization, and maintenance of myelin sheaths, as well as in oligodendrocyte development and axonal survival. Mutations in this gene cause Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease and spastic paraplegia type 2. Alternatively splicing results in multiple transcript variants, including the DM20 splice variant. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2015]. * **UniProt Summary**: This is the major myelin protein from the central nervous system. It plays an important role in the formation or maintenance of the multilamellar structure of myelin. |Myelin PLP| |structural constituent of myelin sheath| |axon ensheathment in central nervous system| |central nervous system myelination| |long-chain fatty acid biosynthetic process| |myelin sheath| |astrocyte development| |oligodendrocyte development| |substantia nigra development| |astrocyte differentiation| |neural nucleus development| |oligodendrocyte differentiation| |midbrain development| |integrin-mediated signaling pathway| |myelination| |glial cell development| |ensheathment of neurons| |axon ensheathment| |long-chain fatty acid metabolic process| |fatty acid biosynthetic process| |glial cell differentiation| |monocarboxylic acid biosynthetic process| |structural molecule activity| |gliogenesis| |carboxylic acid biosynthetic process| |organic acid biosynthetic process| |fatty acid metabolic process| |axon development| |anterograde trans-synaptic signaling| |chemical synaptic transmission| |trans-synaptic signaling| |synaptic signaling| |inflammatory response| |monocarboxylic acid metabolic process| |lipid biosynthetic process| |small molecule biosynthetic process| |neuron projection development| |brain development| |head development| |neuron development| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |cellular lipid metabolic process| |central nervous system development| |oxoacid metabolic process| |neuron differentiation| |organic acid metabolic process| |cell-cell signaling| |plasma membrane bounded cell projection organization| |cell projection organization| |lipid metabolic process| |defense response| |generation of neurons| |neurogenesis| |cell development| |small molecule metabolic process| |positive regulation of gene expression| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found.
