Following synthesis in the kidney and liver, the enzyme is secreted into the circulation, where it binds to high density lipoprotein (HDL) particles and hydrolyzes thiolactones and xenobiotics, including paraoxon, a metabolite of the insecticide parathion. Polymorphisms in this gene may be associated with coronary artery disease and diabetic retinopathy. The gene is found in a cluster of three related paraoxonase genes on chromosome 7. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2017]. * **UniProt Summary**: Hydrolyzes the toxic metabolites of a variety of organophosphorus insecticides. Capable of hydrolyzing a broad spectrum of organophosphate substrates and lactones, and a number of aromatic carboxylic acid esters. Mediates an enzymatic protection of low density lipoproteins against oxidative modification and the consequent series of events leading to atheroma formation. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10479665, ECO:0000269|PubMed:15772423}. |SGL| |Arylesterase| |aryldialkylphosphatase activity| |negative regulation of plasma lipoprotein oxidation| |regulation of plasma lipoprotein oxidation| |acyl-L-homoserine-lactone lactonohydrolase activity| |response to fluoride| |arylesterase activity| |spherical high-density lipoprotein particle| |positive regulation of cholesterol efflux| |lipoxygenase pathway| |high-density lipoprotein particle| |positive regulation of sterol transport| |regulation of cholesterol efflux| |positive regulation of cholesterol transport| |regulation of cholesterol transport| |regulation of sterol transport| |positive regulation of lipid transport| |phosphatidylcholine metabolic process| |positive regulation of lipid localization| |response to fatty acid| |phospholipid binding| |regulation of lipid transport| |positive regulation of transporter activity| |icosanoid metabolic process| |cholesterol metabolic process| |organophosphate catabolic process| |secondary alcohol metabolic process| |sterol metabolic process| |regulation of lipid localization| |blood microparticle| |fatty acid derivative metabolic process| |positive regulation of binding| |ammonium ion metabolic process| |steroid metabolic process| |carboxylic acid catabolic process| |organic acid catabolic process| |regulation of transporter activity| |glycerophospholipid metabolic process| |dephosphorylation| |alcohol metabolic process| |fatty acid metabolic process| |response to acid chemical| |phospholipid metabolic process| |regulation of binding| |glycerolipid metabolic process| |small molecule catabolic process| |aromatic compound catabolic process| |organic hydroxy compound metabolic process| |response to nutrient levels| |response to toxic substance| |monocarboxylic acid metabolic process| |response to extracellular stimulus| |response to inorganic substance| |intracellular membrane-bounded organelle| |negative regulation of cellular component organization| |calcium ion binding| |response to lipid| |protein homodimerization activity| |organophosphate metabolic process| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |cellular lipid metabolic process| |positive regulation of transport| |oxoacid metabolic process| |organic acid metabolic process| |negative regulation of multicellular organismal process| |lipid metabolic process| |response to oxygen-containing compound| |extracellular space| |small molecule metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| |positive regulation of molecular function| |cellular catabolic process| |regulation of transport| |extracellular region| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found.
