The protein is primarily secreted by axons in the brain, and preferentially reacts with and inhibits tissue-type plasminogen activator. It is thought to play a role in the regulation of axonal growth and the development of synaptic plasticity. Mutations in this gene result in familial encephalopathy with neuroserpin inclusion bodies (FENIB), which is a dominantly inherited form of familial encephalopathy and epilepsy characterized by the accumulation of mutant neuroserpin polymers. Multiple alternatively spliced variants, encoding the same protein, have been identified. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Serine protease inhibitor that inhibits plasminogen activators and plasmin but not thrombin (PubMed:9442076, PubMed:26329378, PubMed:19265707, PubMed:19285087, PubMed:11880376). May be involved in the formation or reorganization of synaptic connections as well as for synaptic plasticity in the adult nervous system. May protect neurons from cell damage by tissue-type plasminogen activator (Probable). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:11880376, ECO:0000269|PubMed:19265707, ECO:0000269|PubMed:19285087, ECO:0000269|PubMed:26329378, ECO:0000269|PubMed:9442076, ECO:0000305}. |Serpin| |cytoplasmic vesicle lumen| |peripheral nervous system development| |serine-type endopeptidase inhibitor activity| |secretory granule lumen| |perikaryon| |negative regulation of endopeptidase activity| |negative regulation of peptidase activity| |positive regulation of neuron projection development| |negative regulation of proteolysis| |positive regulation of neuron differentiation| |neuronal cell body| |positive regulation of cell projection organization| |regulation of endopeptidase activity| |regulation of peptidase activity| |negative regulation of hydrolase activity| |positive regulation of neurogenesis| |regulation of neuron projection development| |positive regulation of nervous system development| |positive regulation of cell development| |regulation of neuron differentiation| |regulation of cell adhesion| |regulation of plasma membrane bounded cell projection organization| |regulation of cell projection organization| |regulation of proteolysis| |negative regulation of catalytic activity| |regulation of neurogenesis| |regulation of nervous system development| |regulation of cell development| |positive regulation of cell differentiation| |central nervous system development| |negative regulation of cellular protein metabolic process| |negative regulation of protein metabolic process| |negative regulation of molecular function| |positive regulation of cellular component organization| |regulation of hydrolase activity| |positive regulation of developmental process| |generation of neurons| |extracellular space| |neurogenesis| |positive regulation of multicellular organismal process| |regulation of cell differentiation| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found.
