The encoded protein is a type 3 sodium-dependent phosphate symporter that plays an important role in phosphate homeostasis by mediating cellular phosphate uptake. The encoded protein also confers susceptibility to viral infection as a gamma-retroviral receptor. Mutations in this gene may play a role in familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2012]. * **UniProt Summary**: Sodium-phosphate symporter which seems to play a fundamental housekeeping role in phosphate transport by absorbing phosphate from interstitial fluid for normal cellular functions such as cellular metabolism, signal transduction, and nucleic acid and lipid synthesis. In vitro, sodium-dependent phosphate uptake is not siginificantly affected by acidic and alkaline conditions, however sodium-independent phosphate uptake occurs at acidic conditions. May play a role in extracellular matrix, cartilage and vascular calcification. Functions as a retroviral receptor and confers human cells susceptibility to infection to amphotropic murine leukemia virus (A-MuLV), 10A1 murine leukemia virus (10A1 MLV) and some feline leukemia virus subgroup B (FeLV-B) variants. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:11435563, ECO:0000269|PubMed:12205090, ECO:0000269|PubMed:15955065, ECO:0000269|PubMed:16790504, ECO:0000269|PubMed:8302848}. |PHO4| |sodium:inorganic phosphate symporter activity| |inorganic phosphate transmembrane transporter activity| |sodium:phosphate symporter activity| |phosphate ion transmembrane transport| |phosphate ion transport| |virus receptor activity| |sodium ion transmembrane transport| |viral entry into host cell| |entry into host cell| |entry into host| |inorganic anion transmembrane transport| |sodium ion transport| |interaction with host| |inorganic anion transport| |viral life cycle| |signaling receptor activity| |anion transmembrane transport| |monovalent inorganic cation transport| |inorganic cation transmembrane transport| |anion transport| |cation transmembrane transport| |metal ion transport| |inorganic ion transmembrane transport| |viral process| |symbiotic process| |interspecies interaction between organisms| |cation transport| |ion transmembrane transport| |transmembrane transport| |ion transport| |integral component of plasma membrane| |membrane| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp513|ONC212 0.15μM R08 exp513]]|2.28| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
