Aldehyde dehydrogenases are a family of isozymes that may play a major role in the detoxification of aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation. The encoded protein is able to oxidize long-chain fatty aldehydes in vitro, and may play a role in protection from oxidative stress. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2014]. * **UniProt Summary**: Oxidizes medium and long chain saturated and unsaturated aldehydes. Metabolizes also benzaldehyde. Low activity towards acetaldehyde and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde. May not metabolize short chain aldehydes. May use both NADP(+) and NAD(+) as cofactors. May have a protective role against the cytotoxicity induced by lipid peroxidation. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17382292, ECO:0000269|PubMed:23721920}. |Aldedh| |benzaldehyde dehydrogenase (NADP+) activity| |benzaldehyde dehydrogenase (NAD+) activity| |3-chloroallyl aldehyde dehydrogenase activity| |aldehyde dehydrogenase [NAD(P)+] activity| |aldehyde catabolic process| |ethanol catabolic process| |primary alcohol catabolic process| |ethanol metabolic process| |antibiotic catabolic process| |cellular aldehyde metabolic process| |alcohol catabolic process| |organic hydroxy compound catabolic process| |primary alcohol metabolic process| |sphingolipid biosynthetic process| |specific granule membrane| |secretory granule membrane| |antibiotic metabolic process| |membrane lipid biosynthetic process| |vesicle| |drug catabolic process| |sphingolipid metabolic process| |membrane lipid metabolic process| |cellular response to oxidative stress| |alcohol metabolic process| |response to oxidative stress| |small molecule catabolic process| |organic hydroxy compound metabolic process| |neutrophil degranulation| |neutrophil activation involved in immune response| |neutrophil mediated immunity| |drug metabolic process| |neutrophil activation| |granulocyte activation| |leukocyte degranulation| |myeloid leukocyte mediated immunity| |myeloid cell activation involved in immune response| |lipid biosynthetic process| |myeloid leukocyte activation| |leukocyte activation involved in immune response| |cell activation involved in immune response| |regulated exocytosis| |leukocyte mediated immunity| |exocytosis| |leukocyte activation| |cellular lipid metabolic process| |oxidation-reduction process| |secretion by cell| |export from cell| |cell activation| |immune effector process| |secretion| |lipid metabolic process| |organonitrogen compound biosynthetic process| |cellular response to stress| |small molecule metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| |cellular catabolic process| |immune response| |vesicle-mediated transport| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found.
