This gene encodes a member of a subset of aquaporins called the aquaglyceroporins. This protein allows passage of a broad range of noncharged solutes and also stimulates urea transport and osmotic water permeability. This protein may also facilitate the uptake of glycerol in hepatic tissue . The encoded protein may also play a role in specialized leukocyte functions such as immunological response and bactericidal activity. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2016]. * **UniProt Summary**: Forms a channel with a broad specificity. Mediates passage of a wide variety of non-charged solutes including carbamides, polyols, purines, and pyrimidines in a phloretin- and mercury-sensitive manner, whereas amino acids, cyclic sugars, Na(+), K(+), Cl(-), and deprotonated monocarboxylates are excluded. Also permeable to urea and glycerol. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10564231}. |MIP| |carboxylic acid transmembrane transporter activity| |purine nucleobase transmembrane transporter activity| |pyrimidine nucleobase transmembrane transporter activity| |amine transmembrane transporter activity| |polyol transmembrane transporter activity| |purine nucleobase transmembrane transport| |urea channel activity| |pyrimidine nucleobase transport| |canalicular bile acid transport| |glycerol channel activity| |water transmembrane transporter activity| |glycerol transport| |amine transport| |purine nucleobase transport| |urea transmembrane transporter activity| |urea transmembrane transport| |purine-containing compound transmembrane transport| |nucleobase transport| |urea transport| |pyrimidine-containing compound transmembrane transport| |response to mercury ion| |polyol transport| |water channel activity| |one-carbon compound transport| |water transport| |fluid transport| |bile acid and bile salt transport| |excretion| |cellular response to cAMP| |water homeostasis| |carbohydrate transport| |response to osmotic stress| |acid secretion| |response to cAMP| |organic acid transmembrane transport| |carboxylic acid transmembrane transport| |response to organophosphorus| |monocarboxylic acid transport| |organic hydroxy compound transport| |response to purine-containing compound| |basolateral plasma membrane| |anion transmembrane transport| |carboxylic acid transport| |organic acid transport| |lipid transport| |lipid localization| |response to metal ion| |organic anion transport| |response to inorganic substance| |cellular response to organic cyclic compound| |anion transport| |cellular response to organonitrogen compound| |cellular response to nitrogen compound| |intracellular membrane-bounded organelle| |response to organic cyclic compound| |ion transmembrane transport| |response to organonitrogen compound| |cellular response to oxygen-containing compound| |response to nitrogen compound| |chemical homeostasis| |secretion| |response to abiotic stimulus| |cellular response to endogenous stimulus| |transmembrane transport| |ion transport| |integral component of plasma membrane| |response to endogenous stimulus| |response to oxygen-containing compound| |amide transport| |homeostatic process| |nitrogen compound transport| |system process| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found.
