The channel generates a biphasic current with a fast inactivating and a slow sustained phase. Has high selectivity for sodium ions and can also transport lithium ions with high efficiency. Isoform 2 can also transport potassium, but with lower efficiency. It is nearly impermeable to the larger rubidium and cesium ions. Isoform 3 can also transport calcium ions. Mediates glutamate-independent Ca(2+) entry into neurons upon acidosis. This Ca(2+) overloading is toxic for cortical neurons and may be in part responsible for ischemic brain injury. Heteromeric channel assembly seems to modulate channel properties. Functions as a postsynaptic proton receptor that influences intracellular Ca(2+) concentration and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II phosphorylation and thereby the density of dendritic spines. Modulates activity in the circuits underlying innate fear. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:22760635}. |ASC| |acid-sensing ion channel activity| |sensory perception of sour taste| |ligand-gated sodium channel activity| |negative regulation of neurotransmitter secretion| |negative regulation of neurotransmitter transport| |cellular response to pH| |response to acidic pH| |behavioral fear response| |behavioral defense response| |response to amphetamine| |protein homotrimerization| |fear response| |response to pH| |response to amine| |response to bronchodilator| |protein trimerization| |negative regulation of synaptic transmission| |sensory perception of taste| |multicellular organismal response to stress| |associative learning| |sodium ion transmembrane transport| |regulation of neurotransmitter secretion| |memory| |regulation of neurotransmitter transport| |learning| |sodium ion transport| |calcium ion transmembrane transport| |negative regulation of secretion by cell| |negative regulation of secretion| |calcium ion transport| |learning or memory| |synapse| |divalent metal ion transport| |cognition| |response to xenobiotic stimulus| |divalent inorganic cation transport| |cellular response to environmental stimulus| |cellular response to abiotic stimulus| |protein homooligomerization| |regulation of neurotransmitter levels| |monovalent inorganic cation transport| |regulation of membrane potential| |modulation of chemical synaptic transmission| |regulation of trans-synaptic signaling| |negative regulation of transport| |response to toxic substance| |protein complex oligomerization| |sensory perception of chemical stimulus| |inorganic cation transmembrane transport| |behavior| |cation transmembrane transport| |cell surface| |metal ion transport| |inorganic ion transmembrane transport| |regulation of secretion by cell| |regulation of secretion| |cation transport| |regulation of cellular localization| |ion transmembrane transport| |sensory perception| |Golgi apparatus| |response to organonitrogen compound| |response to drug| |response to nitrogen compound| |response to abiotic stimulus| |transmembrane transport| |defense response| |negative regulation of cell communication| |negative regulation of signaling| |ion transport| |nervous system process| |integral component of plasma membrane| |protein-containing complex assembly| |protein-containing complex subunit organization| |regulation of transport| |system process| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp122|Golgicide-A 4μM R03 exp122]]|1.76| |[[:results:exp246|UM0011500 10μM R05 exp246]]|2.02| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
