The protein forms a homodimer which localizes to both the nucleus and cytoplasm and is specifically associated with chromosomes during mitosis. This protein binds to double stranded DNA in a non-specific manner and also binds to LEM-domain containing proteins of the nuclear envelope. This protein is thought to facilitate nuclear reassembly by binding with both DNA and inner nuclear membrane proteins and thereby recruit chromatin to the nuclear periphery. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same protein.[provided by RefSeq, Jan 2009]. * **UniProt Summary**: Plays fundamental roles in nuclear assembly, chromatin organization, gene expression and gonad development. May potently compress chromatin structure and be involved in membrane recruitment and chromatin decondensation during nuclear assembly. Contains 2 non-specific dsDNA-binding sites which may promote DNA cross-bridging. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12163470}. (Microbial infection) In case of poxvirus infection, has an antiviral activity by blocking viral DNA replication. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18005698}. |BAF| |LEM domain binding| |establishment of integrated proviral latency| |establishment of viral latency| |mitotic nuclear envelope reassembly| |viral latency| |DNA integration| |nuclear envelope reassembly| |condensed chromosome| |chromosome condensation| |nuclear envelope organization| |negative regulation of viral genome replication| |negative regulation of viral life cycle| |regulation of viral genome replication| |negative regulation of viral process| |protein N-terminus binding| |nucleus organization| |regulation of viral life cycle| |DNA packaging| |nuclear envelope| |protein C-terminus binding| |regulation of viral process| |negative regulation of multi-organism process| |regulation of symbiosis, encompassing mutualism through parasitism| |nuclear transport| |chromosome segregation| |response to virus| |DNA conformation change| |enzyme binding| |endomembrane system organization| |mitotic cell cycle process| |mitotic cell cycle| |viral process| |DNA metabolic process| |regulation of multi-organism process| |symbiotic process| |interspecies interaction between organisms| |membrane organization| |protein homodimerization activity| |cell cycle process| |chromosome organization| |identical protein binding| |response to other organism| |response to external biotic stimulus| |response to biotic stimulus| |cell cycle| |DNA binding| |intracellular transport| |establishment of localization in cell| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |Pifithrin-alpha 20μM R07 exp390|-2.85| |PT-1 25μM R07 exp392|-2.38| |Nifuroxazide 1μM R01 exp51|-2.26| |Rapamycin 2μM plus Cyclosporin-A 3μM R07 exp307|-2.12| |Rapamycin 2μM plus FK-506 5μM R07 exp308|-2.12| |Taxol 0.002μM R01 exp54|-1.99| |BI-2536 0.001μM R01 exp41|-1.9| |Calcium Ionophore 0.4μM R07 exp342|-1.86| |TNF-alpha 44ng/ml R08 exp533|1.98| ^Gene^Correlation^ |HGC6.3|0.431| Global Fraction of Cell Lines Where Essential: 551/726 ^Tissue^Fraction Of Cell Lines Where Essential^ |1290807.0|1/1| |909776.0|1/1| |bile duct|25/28| |blood|20/28| |bone|24/25| |breast|28/33| |central nervous system|44/56| |cervix|4/4| |colorectal|11/17| |esophagus|9/13| |fibroblast|1/1| |gastric|11/15| |kidney|16/21| |liver|13/20| |lung|50/75| |lymphocyte|13/14| |ovary|18/26| |pancreas|11/24| |peripheral nervous system|14/16| |plasma cell|13/15| |prostate|0/1| |skin|20/24| |soft tissue|6/7| |thyroid|1/2| |upper aerodigestive|15/22| |urinary tract|21/29| |uterus|4/5| == Essentiality in NALM6 == * **Essentiality Rank**: 1020 * **Expression level (log2 read counts)**: 6.62
