This enzyme catalyzes the reversible transamination of branched-chain alpha-keto acids to branched-chain L-amino acids essential for cell growth. Two different clinical disorders have been attributed to a defect of branched-chain amino acid transamination: hypervalinemia and hyperleucine-isoleucinemia. As there is also a gene encoding a mitochondrial form of this enzyme, mutations in either gene may contribute to these disorders. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described. [provided by RefSeq, May 2010]. * **UniProt Summary**: Catalyzes the first reaction in the catabolism of the essential branched chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine. |Aminotran 4| |leucine biosynthetic process| |branched-chain amino acid biosynthetic process| |valine biosynthetic process| |L-isoleucine transaminase activity| |L-valine transaminase activity| |L-leucine transaminase activity| |branched-chain-amino-acid transaminase activity| |valine metabolic process| |leucine metabolic process| |branched-chain amino acid metabolic process| |branched-chain amino acid catabolic process| |alpha-amino acid biosynthetic process| |cellular amino acid biosynthetic process| |G1/S transition of mitotic cell cycle| |cell cycle G1/S phase transition| |cellular amino acid catabolic process| |alpha-amino acid metabolic process| |organic acid catabolic process| |carboxylic acid catabolic process| |mitotic cell cycle phase transition| |cell cycle phase transition| |carboxylic acid biosynthetic process| |organic acid biosynthetic process| |cellular amino acid metabolic process| |small molecule catabolic process| |small molecule biosynthetic process| |mitotic cell cycle process| |mitotic cell cycle| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |cell cycle process| |oxoacid metabolic process| |organic acid metabolic process| |organonitrogen compound catabolic process| |identical protein binding| |mitochondrion| |cell cycle| |organonitrogen compound biosynthetic process| |small molecule metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| |cellular catabolic process| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp65|Mubritinib 0.2μM R02 exp65]]|-2.24| |[[:results:exp436|Dynasore 7μM R08 exp436]]|-1.76| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
