Transfer of the methyl group from betaine to homocysteine creates methionine, which donates the methyl group to methylate DNA, proteins, lipids, and other intracellular metabolites. The protein encoded by this gene is one of two methyl transferases that can catalyze the transfer of the methyl group from betaine to homocysteine. Anomalies in homocysteine metabolism have been implicated in disorders ranging from vascular disease to neural tube birth defects such as spina bifida. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, May 2010]. * **UniProt Summary**: Involved in the regulation of homocysteine metabolism. Converts homocysteine to methionine using S-methylmethionine (SMM) as a methyl donor. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18230605}. |S-methyl trans| |S-methylmethionine metabolic process| |S-methylmethionine-homocysteine S-methyltransferase activity| |betaine-homocysteine S-methyltransferase activity| |amino acid salvage| |L-methionine salvage| |L-methionine biosynthetic process| |methionine biosynthetic process| |methionine metabolic process| |sulfur amino acid biosynthetic process| |S-adenosylmethionine metabolic process| |amino-acid betaine metabolic process| |aspartate family amino acid biosynthetic process| |cellular metabolic compound salvage| |sulfur amino acid metabolic process| |aspartate family amino acid metabolic process| |alpha-amino acid biosynthetic process| |cellular amino acid biosynthetic process| |sulfur compound biosynthetic process| |cellular modified amino acid metabolic process| |alpha-amino acid metabolic process| |coenzyme metabolic process| |carboxylic acid biosynthetic process| |organic acid biosynthetic process| |cellular amino acid metabolic process| |methylation| |sulfur compound metabolic process| |cofactor metabolic process| |drug metabolic process| |small molecule biosynthetic process| |zinc ion binding| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |oxoacid metabolic process| |organic acid metabolic process| |organonitrogen compound biosynthetic process| |small molecule metabolic process| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |CyclicAMP 200μM R08 exp475|-2.38| |MS094 2μM R03 exp136|-2.34| |ONC212 0.15μM R08 exp513|-2.01| |CR131-b 0.005μM R08 exp474|-1.87| |Isoniazid 100μM R08 exp494|-1.82| |CoCl2 18μM R07 exp346|1.71| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
