It is one of the three subunits that constitutes complement component 8 (C8), which is composed of a disulfide-linked C8 alpha-gamma heterodimer and a non-covalently associated C8 beta chain. C8 participates in the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC) on bacterial cell membranes. While subunits alpha and beta play a role in complement-mediated bacterial killing, the gamma subunit is not required for the bactericidal activity. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2011]. * **UniProt Summary**: C8 is a constituent of the membrane attack complex. C8 binds to the C5B-7 complex, forming the C5B-8 complex. C5-B8 binds C9 and acts as a catalyst in the polymerization of C9. The gamma subunit seems to be able to bind retinol. |Lipocalin| |complement binding| |membrane attack complex| |retinol binding| |complement activation, alternative pathway| |cytolysis| |regulation of complement activation| |regulation of humoral immune response| |blood microparticle| |complement activation, classical pathway| |humoral immune response mediated by circulating immunoglobulin| |complement activation| |immunoglobulin mediated immune response| |B cell mediated immunity| |protein-containing complex binding| |lymphocyte mediated immunity| |adaptive immune response based on somatic recombination of immune receptors built from immunoglobulin superfamily domains| |humoral immune response| |regulation of immune effector process| |adaptive immune response| |activation of immune response| |innate immune response| |leukocyte mediated immunity| |positive regulation of immune response| |defense response to other organism| |immune effector process| |regulation of immune response| |positive regulation of immune system process| |response to other organism| |response to external biotic stimulus| |response to biotic stimulus| |defense response| |regulation of immune system process| |immune response| |extracellular region| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp60|Vinblastine 0.002μM R01 exp60]]|-1.7| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
