These channels mediate the entry of calcium ions into excitable cells, and are also involved in a variety of calcium-dependent processes, including muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell motility, cell division and cell death. This gene encodes the alpha-1E subunit of the R-type calcium channels, which belong to the 'high-voltage activated' group that maybe involved in the modulation of firing patterns of neurons important for information processing. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2011]. * **UniProt Summary**: Voltage-sensitive calcium channels (VSCC) mediate the entry of calcium ions into excitable cells and are also involved in a variety of calcium-dependent processes, including muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell motility, cell division and cell death. The isoform alpha-1E gives rise to R-type calcium currents. R-type calcium channels belong to the 'high-voltage activated' (HVA) group and are blocked by nickel, and partially by omega-agatoxin-IIIA (omega-Aga-IIIA). They are however insensitive to dihydropyridines (DHP), omega- conotoxin-GVIA (omega-CTx-GVIA), and omega-agatoxin-IVA (omega- Aga-IVA). Calcium channels containing alpha-1E subunit could be involved in the modulation of firing patterns of neurons which is important for information processing. |Ca chan IQ| |Ion trans| |PKD channel| |voltage-gated cation channel activity| |voltage-gated calcium channel complex| |voltage-gated calcium channel activity| |calcium ion import| |membrane depolarization| |regulation of insulin secretion| |calcium ion transmembrane transport| |regulation of peptide hormone secretion| |calcium ion transport| |regulation of hormone secretion| |divalent metal ion transport| |divalent inorganic cation transport| |chemical synaptic transmission| |anterograde trans-synaptic signaling| |regulation of membrane potential| |trans-synaptic signaling| |synaptic signaling| |regulation of protein secretion| |regulation of ion transmembrane transport| |regulation of peptide secretion| |regulation of hormone levels| |inorganic cation transmembrane transport| |regulation of transmembrane transport| |cation transmembrane transport| |metal ion transport| |inorganic ion transmembrane transport| |regulation of ion transport| |regulation of protein transport| |calcium ion binding| |regulation of peptide transport| |regulation of establishment of protein localization| |regulation of secretion by cell| |regulation of secretion| |cation transport| |ion transmembrane transport| |regulation of protein localization| |cell-cell signaling| |transmembrane transport| |ion transport| |regulation of transport| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |Dexamethasone 0.006μM R07 exp351|-1.78| |Torin1 0.08μM R02 exp82|-1.78| |CHIR-124 0.04μM R06 exp272|-1.76| |SGC0649 7μM R03 exp150|1.93| |HMS-I1 1μM R01 exp46|1.95| ^Gene^Correlation^ |POLR2J3|0.52| Global Fraction of Cell Lines Where Essential: 0/739 ^Tissue^Fraction Of Cell Lines Where Essential^ |1290807.0|0/1| |909776.0|0/1| |bile duct|0/28| |blood|0/28| |bone|0/26| |breast|0/33| |central nervous system|0/56| |cervix|0/4| |colorectal|0/17| |esophagus|0/13| |fibroblast|0/1| |gastric|0/16| |kidney|0/21| |liver|0/20| |lung|0/75| |lymphocyte|0/16| |ovary|0/26| |pancreas|0/24| |peripheral nervous system|0/16| |plasma cell|0/15| |prostate|0/1| |skin|0/24| |soft tissue|0/9| |thyroid|0/2| |upper aerodigestive|0/22| |urinary tract|0/29| |uterus|0/5| == Essentiality in NALM6 == * **Essentiality Rank**: 2726 * **Expression level (log2 read counts)**: -0.78
