Along with another protein, the encoded protein forms a cGMP-gated cation channel in the plasma membrane, allowing depolarization of rod photoreceptors. This represents the last step in the phototransduction pathway. Defects in this gene are a cause of retinitis pigmentosa autosomal recessive (ARRP) disease. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Visual signal transduction is mediated by a G-protein coupled cascade using cGMP as second messenger. This protein can be activated by cyclic GMP which leads to an opening of the cation channel and thereby causing a depolarization of rod photoreceptors. |cNMP binding| |Ion trans| |intracellular cGMP-activated cation channel activity| |intracellular cAMP-activated cation channel activity| |rhodopsin mediated signaling pathway| |cGMP binding| |photoreceptor outer segment membrane| |phototransduction, visible light| |regulation of rhodopsin mediated signaling pathway| |phototransduction| |detection of visible light| |detection of light stimulus| |cellular response to light stimulus| |detection of external stimulus| |detection of abiotic stimulus| |regulation of G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway| |cellular response to radiation| |visual perception| |sensory perception of light stimulus| |response to light stimulus| |cellular response to environmental stimulus| |cellular response to abiotic stimulus| |response to radiation| |cation transmembrane transport| |detection of stimulus| |cation transport| |ion transmembrane transport| |sensory perception| |regulation of response to external stimulus| |response to abiotic stimulus| |transmembrane transport| |G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway| |ion transport| |nervous system process| |integral component of plasma membrane| |system process| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp51|Nifuroxazide 1μM R01 exp51]]|2.14| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
