Fibrillar collagen molecules are trimers that can be composed of one or more types of alpha chains. Type V collagen is found in tissues containing type I collagen and appears to regulate the assembly of heterotypic fibers composed of both type I and type V collagen. This gene product is closely related to type XI collagen and it is possible that the collagen chains of types V and XI constitute a single collagen type with tissue-specific chain combinations. Mutations in this gene are thought to be responsible for the symptoms of a subset of patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type III. Messages of several sizes can be detected in northern blots but sequence information cannot confirm the identity of the shorter messages. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Type V collagen is a member of group I collagen (fibrillar forming collagen). It is a minor connective tissue component of nearly ubiquitous distribution. Type V collagen binds to DNA, heparan sulfate, thrombospondin, heparin, and insulin. |COLFI| |Collagen| |collagen type V trimer| |proteoglycan binding| |extracellular matrix structural constituent conferring tensile strength| |collagen fibril organization| |collagen binding| |cell-matrix adhesion| |extracellular matrix structural constituent| |heparin binding| |cell-substrate adhesion| |extracellular matrix| |endoplasmic reticulum lumen| |extracellular matrix organization| |collagen-containing extracellular matrix| |skin development| |extracellular structure organization| |supramolecular fiber organization| |cell adhesion| |biological adhesion| |extracellular space| |protein-containing complex subunit organization| |extracellular region| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |Ribavirin 10μM R01 exp52|-1.84| |HMS-I2 1μM R06 exp286|-1.7| |Geldanamycin 0.015 to 0.025μM on day4 R07 exp316|1.72| ^Gene^Correlation^ |HGC6.3|0.518| Global Fraction of Cell Lines Where Essential: 0/739 ^Tissue^Fraction Of Cell Lines Where Essential^ |1290807.0|0/1| |909776.0|0/1| |bile duct|0/28| |blood|0/28| |bone|0/26| |breast|0/33| |central nervous system|0/56| |cervix|0/4| |colorectal|0/17| |esophagus|0/13| |fibroblast|0/1| |gastric|0/16| |kidney|0/21| |liver|0/20| |lung|0/75| |lymphocyte|0/16| |ovary|0/26| |pancreas|0/24| |peripheral nervous system|0/16| |plasma cell|0/15| |prostate|0/1| |skin|0/24| |soft tissue|0/9| |thyroid|0/2| |upper aerodigestive|0/22| |urinary tract|0/29| |uterus|0/5| == Essentiality in NALM6 == * **Essentiality Rank**: 6130 * **Expression level (log2 read counts)**: -7.68
