Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants, at least one of which encodes a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed to generate two chains that comprise the heterodimeric active enzyme. This enzyme possesses deamidase, esterase and carboxypeptidase activities and acts as a scaffold in the lysosomal multienzyme complex. Mutations in this gene are associated with galactosialidosis. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2015]. * **UniProt Summary**: Protective protein appears to be essential for both the activity of beta-galactosidase and neuraminidase, it associates with these enzymes and exerts a protective function necessary for their stability and activity. This protein is also a carboxypeptidase and can deamidate tachykinins. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:1907282}. |Peptidase S10| |lumenal side of lysosomal membrane| |negative regulation of chaperone-mediated autophagy| |serine-type carboxypeptidase activity| |regulation of chaperone-mediated autophagy| |carboxypeptidase activity| |enzyme activator activity| |glycosphingolipid metabolic process| |negative regulation of autophagy| |azurophil granule lumen| |lysosomal lumen| |glycolipid metabolic process| |liposaccharide metabolic process| |negative regulation of protein catabolic process| |sphingolipid metabolic process| |membrane lipid metabolic process| |lysosome| |negative regulation of cellular catabolic process| |regulation of protein stability| |negative regulation of catabolic process| |regulation of autophagy| |regulation of protein catabolic process| |neutrophil degranulation| |neutrophil activation involved in immune response| |neutrophil mediated immunity| |neutrophil activation| |granulocyte activation| |leukocyte degranulation| |myeloid leukocyte mediated immunity| |myeloid cell activation involved in immune response| |myeloid leukocyte activation| |proteolysis involved in cellular protein catabolic process| |cellular protein catabolic process| |leukocyte activation involved in immune response| |cell activation involved in immune response| |protein catabolic process| |intracellular membrane-bounded organelle| |regulated exocytosis| |leukocyte mediated immunity| |exocytosis| |regulation of cellular catabolic process| |cellular macromolecule catabolic process| |leukocyte activation| |cellular lipid metabolic process| |intracellular protein transport| |regulation of catabolic process| |secretion by cell| |endoplasmic reticulum| |carbohydrate derivative metabolic process| |export from cell| |macromolecule catabolic process| |organonitrogen compound catabolic process| |cell activation| |immune effector process| |negative regulation of protein metabolic process| |secretion| |lipid metabolic process| |proteolysis| |positive regulation of catalytic activity| |protein transport| |intracellular transport| |peptide transport| |amide transport| |cellular protein localization| |cellular macromolecule localization| |establishment of protein localization| |organic substance catabolic process| |positive regulation of molecular function| |cellular catabolic process| |establishment of localization in cell| |nitrogen compound transport| |immune response| |extracellular region| |vesicle-mediated transport| |membrane| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp429|Rapamycin 0.001μM R08 exp429]]|1.71| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
