The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate multiple protein products. These products include the cathepsin D light and heavy chains, which heterodimerize to form the mature enzyme. This enzyme exhibits pepsin-like activity and plays a role in protein turnover and in the proteolytic activation of hormones and growth factors. Mutations in this gene play a causal role in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis-10 and may be involved in the pathogenesis of several other diseases, including breast cancer and possibly Alzheimer's disease. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2015]. * **UniProt Summary**: Acid protease active in intracellular protein breakdown. Plays a role in APP processing following cleavage and activation by ADAM30 which leads to APP degradation (PubMed:27333034). Involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases such as breast cancer and possibly Alzheimer disease. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:27333034}. |A1 Propeptide| |Asp| |aspartic-type peptidase activity| |lipoprotein catabolic process| |aspartic-type endopeptidase activity| |collagen catabolic process| |tertiary granule lumen| |specific granule lumen| |collagen metabolic process| |peptidase activity| |lysosomal lumen| |antigen processing and presentation of exogenous peptide antigen via MHC class II| |antigen processing and presentation of peptide or polysaccharide antigen via MHC class II| |antigen processing and presentation of peptide antigen via MHC class II| |melanosome| |lipoprotein metabolic process| |ficolin-1-rich granule lumen| |positive regulation of cysteine-type endopeptidase activity involved in apoptotic process| |positive regulation of cysteine-type endopeptidase activity| |positive regulation of endopeptidase activity| |antigen processing and presentation of exogenous peptide antigen| |antigen processing and presentation of exogenous antigen| |antigen processing and presentation of peptide antigen| |positive regulation of peptidase activity| |endosome membrane| |regulation of cysteine-type endopeptidase activity involved in apoptotic process| |antigen processing and presentation| |membrane raft| |regulation of cysteine-type endopeptidase activity| |lysosome| |lysosomal membrane| |positive regulation of proteolysis| |collagen-containing extracellular matrix| |regulation of endopeptidase activity| |regulation of peptidase activity| |neutrophil degranulation| |neutrophil activation involved in immune response| |neutrophil mediated immunity| |neutrophil activation| |granulocyte activation| |leukocyte degranulation| |myeloid leukocyte mediated immunity| |myeloid cell activation involved in immune response| |myeloid leukocyte activation| |leukocyte activation involved in immune response| |cell activation involved in immune response| |positive regulation of apoptotic process| |positive regulation of programmed cell death| |protein catabolic process| |positive regulation of cell death| |regulated exocytosis| |regulation of proteolysis| |regulation of establishment of protein localization| |leukocyte mediated immunity| |positive regulation of hydrolase activity| |exocytosis| |leukocyte activation| |secretion by cell| |regulation of protein localization| |export from cell| |macromolecule catabolic process| |organonitrogen compound catabolic process| |cell activation| |immune effector process| |secretion| |proteolysis| |regulation of hydrolase activity| |positive regulation of catalytic activity| |regulation of apoptotic process| |regulation of programmed cell death| |extracellular space| |positive regulation of cellular protein metabolic process| |regulation of cell death| |positive regulation of protein metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| |positive regulation of molecular function| |immune response| |extracellular region| |vesicle-mediated transport| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp222|Betulinic acid 10 to 15μM on day4 R05 exp222]]|2.93| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
