Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants. At least one of these variants encodes a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed to generate the mature enzyme. This enzyme, an aspartic endopeptidase, may be involved in antigen processing and the maturation of secretory proteins. Elevated expression of this gene has been observed in neurodegeneration. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2015]. * **UniProt Summary**: May have a role in immune function. Probably involved in the processing of antigenic peptides during MHC class II-mediated antigen presentation. May play a role in activation-induced lymphocyte depletion in the thymus, and in neuronal degeneration and glial cell activation in the brain. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:8765029}. |A1 Propeptide| |Asp| |protein autoprocessing| |aspartic-type endopeptidase activity| |peptidase activity| |antigen processing and presentation of exogenous peptide antigen via MHC class II| |antigen processing and presentation of peptide antigen via MHC class II| |antigen processing and presentation of peptide or polysaccharide antigen via MHC class II| |protein processing| |antigen processing and presentation of exogenous peptide antigen| |antigen processing and presentation of exogenous antigen| |antigen processing and presentation of peptide antigen| |antigen processing and presentation| |protein maturation| |endosome| |protein catabolic process| |protein homodimerization activity| |macromolecule catabolic process| |organonitrogen compound catabolic process| |proteolysis| |organic substance catabolic process| |gene expression| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp525|Sulforaphane 9μM R08 exp525]]|1.74| |[[:results:exp41|BI-2536 0.001μM R01 exp41]]|1.75| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
