The cytochrome P450 proteins are monooxygenases which catalyze many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. This endoplasmic reticulum protein is expressed in the brain, where it converts cholesterol to 24S-hydroxycholesterol. While cholesterol cannot pass the blood-brain barrier, 24S-hydroxycholesterol can be secreted in the brain into the circulation to be returned to the liver for catabolism. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Involved in the turnover of cholesterol. It converts cholesterol into 24S-hydroxycholesterol and, to a lesser extent, 25-hydroxycholesterol. Has also activity with xenobiotic compounds, such as clotrimazole. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:18621681, ECO:0000269|PubMed:20667828}. |p450| |cholesterol 24-hydroxylase activity| |progesterone metabolic process| |cholesterol catabolic process| |sterol catabolic process| |bile acid biosynthetic process| |steroid catabolic process| |C21-steroid hormone metabolic process| |steroid hydroxylase activity| |bile acid metabolic process| |regulation of long-term synaptic potentiation| |alcohol catabolic process| |cellular ketone metabolic process| |organic hydroxy compound catabolic process| |postsynapse| |presynapse| |cholesterol metabolic process| |cellular hormone metabolic process| |steroid biosynthetic process| |secondary alcohol metabolic process| |xenobiotic metabolic process| |iron ion binding| |sterol metabolic process| |heme binding| |monocarboxylic acid biosynthetic process| |organic hydroxy compound biosynthetic process| |cellular response to xenobiotic stimulus| |regulation of synaptic plasticity| |hormone metabolic process| |steroid metabolic process| |lipid catabolic process| |response to xenobiotic stimulus| |carboxylic acid biosynthetic process| |organic acid biosynthetic process| |alcohol metabolic process| |dendrite| |small molecule catabolic process| |modulation of chemical synaptic transmission| |regulation of trans-synaptic signaling| |organic hydroxy compound metabolic process| |organic cyclic compound catabolic process| |drug metabolic process| |monocarboxylic acid metabolic process| |regulation of hormone levels| |cell junction| |lipid biosynthetic process| |small molecule biosynthetic process| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |endoplasmic reticulum membrane| |oxidation-reduction process| |oxoacid metabolic process| |endoplasmic reticulum| |organic acid metabolic process| |lipid metabolic process| |organic cyclic compound biosynthetic process| |small molecule metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp400|Senexin-A 25μM R07 exp400]]|1.76| |[[:results:exp474|CR131-b 0.005μM R08 exp474]]|1.93| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
