The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed into covalently attached heavy and light chains to form the mature enzyme, which functions as an oxidant. The enzyme is released at sites of parasitic infection or allergen stimulation to mediate lysis of protozoa or parasitic worms. The gene is found in a gene cluster with other peroxidase genes on chromosome 17. Mutations in this gene result in eosinophil peroxidase deficiency. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016]. * **UniProt Summary**: Mediates tyrosine nitration of secondary granule proteins in mature resting eosinophils. Shows significant inhibitory activity towards Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv by inducing bacterial fragmentation and lysis. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:12540536, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18694936}. |An peroxidase| |defense response to nematode| |negative regulation of interleukin-5 production| |negative regulation of interleukin-10 production| |eosinophil migration| |regulation of interleukin-5 production| |positive regulation of interleukin-4 production| |hydrogen peroxide catabolic process| |regulation of interleukin-4 production| |peroxidase activity| |hydrogen peroxide metabolic process| |regulation of interleukin-10 production| |antibiotic catabolic process| |cofactor catabolic process| |cellular oxidant detoxification| |granulocyte migration| |cellular detoxification| |antibiotic metabolic process| |reactive oxygen species metabolic process| |secretory granule lumen| |myeloid leukocyte migration| |detoxification| |heme binding| |drug catabolic process| |cellular response to toxic substance| |negative regulation of cytokine production| |defense response to bacterium| |leukocyte migration| |response to oxidative stress| |cofactor metabolic process| |positive regulation of cytokine production| |neutrophil degranulation| |neutrophil activation involved in immune response| |neutrophil mediated immunity| |drug metabolic process| |neutrophil activation| |granulocyte activation| |response to toxic substance| |leukocyte degranulation| |myeloid leukocyte mediated immunity| |myeloid cell activation involved in immune response| |myeloid leukocyte activation| |leukocyte activation involved in immune response| |cell activation involved in immune response| |response to bacterium| |regulation of cytokine production| |regulated exocytosis| |leukocyte mediated immunity| |exocytosis| |leukocyte activation| |defense response to other organism| |oxidation-reduction process| |cell migration| |secretion by cell| |export from cell| |cell activation| |localization of cell| |cell motility| |immune effector process| |secretion| |negative regulation of multicellular organismal process| |response to other organism| |response to external biotic stimulus| |locomotion| |response to biotic stimulus| |defense response| |movement of cell or subcellular component| |extracellular space| |positive regulation of multicellular organismal process| |cellular catabolic process| |immune response| |extracellular region| |vesicle-mediated transport| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp514|Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate 0.57μM R08 exp514]]|-1.85| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
