The encoded protein binds galanin receptors 1, 2 and 3 with the highest affinity for galanin receptor 3 and has been implicated in biological processes involving the central nervous system including hypothalamic regulation of metabolism and reproduction. A peptide encoded by a splice variant of this gene, termed alarin, has vasoactive properties, displays antimicrobial activity against E. coli, and may serve as a marker for neuroblastic tumors.[provided by RefSeq, Nov 2014]. * **UniProt Summary**: Isoform 1: Hypothalamic neuropeptide which binds to the G-protein-coupled galanin receptors (GALR1, GALR2 and GALR3). Involved in a large number of putative physiological functions in CNS homeostatic processes, including the regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion. |Galanin| |behavioral response to starvation| |regulation of appetite| |antimicrobial humoral immune response mediated by antimicrobial peptide| |defense response to Gram-negative bacterium| |hormone activity| |neuropeptide signaling pathway| |antimicrobial humoral response| |response to starvation| |response to insulin| |defense response to bacterium| |humoral immune response| |response to peptide hormone| |cellular component| |response to peptide| |response to nutrient levels| |response to extracellular stimulus| |response to bacterium| |response to hormone| |defense response to other organism| |response to organonitrogen compound| |response to nitrogen compound| |response to other organism| |response to external biotic stimulus| |G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway| |response to biotic stimulus| |defense response| |response to endogenous stimulus| |response to oxygen-containing compound| |immune response| |extracellular region| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp120|Dimethyl-Sulfoxide 1pc R03 exp120]]|-1.73| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
