This protein is found in the cytoplasm and acts as a homotetramer. Defects in this gene are a cause of GNMT deficiency (hypermethioninemia). Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Naturally occurring readthrough transcription occurs between the upstream CNPY3 (canopy FGF signaling regulator 3) gene and this gene and is represented with GeneID:107080644. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2016]. * **UniProt Summary**: Catalyzes the methylation of glycine by using S- adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) to form N-methylglycine (sarcosine) with the concomitant production of S-adenosylhomocysteine (AdoHcy). Possible crucial role in the regulation of tissue concentration of AdoMet and of metabolism of methionine. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15340920, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17660255}. |Methyltransf 11| |Methyltransf 18| |Methyltransf 12| |glycine N-methyltransferase activity| |sarcosine metabolic process| |S-adenosylhomocysteine metabolic process| |S-adenosyl-L-methionine binding| |folic acid binding| |glycine binding| |methionine metabolic process| |S-adenosylmethionine metabolic process| |one-carbon metabolic process| |sulfur amino acid metabolic process| |regulation of gluconeogenesis| |glycogen metabolic process| |cellular glucan metabolic process| |glucan metabolic process| |aspartate family amino acid metabolic process| |purine ribonucleoside metabolic process| |energy reserve metabolic process| |purine nucleoside metabolic process| |ribonucleoside metabolic process| |cellular polysaccharide metabolic process| |polysaccharide metabolic process| |protein homotetramerization| |regulation of carbohydrate biosynthetic process| |nucleoside metabolic process| |regulation of glucose metabolic process| |glycosyl compound metabolic process| |regulation of cellular carbohydrate metabolic process| |protein tetramerization| |cellular carbohydrate metabolic process| |cellular modified amino acid metabolic process| |regulation of carbohydrate metabolic process| |alpha-amino acid metabolic process| |energy derivation by oxidation of organic compounds| |coenzyme metabolic process| |cellular amino acid metabolic process| |methylation| |protein homooligomerization| |sulfur compound metabolic process| |purine-containing compound metabolic process| |generation of precursor metabolites and energy| |regulation of small molecule metabolic process| |cofactor metabolic process| |carbohydrate metabolic process| |drug metabolic process| |protein complex oligomerization| |nucleobase-containing small molecule metabolic process| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |oxidation-reduction process| |oxoacid metabolic process| |organic acid metabolic process| |carbohydrate derivative metabolic process| |identical protein binding| |protein-containing complex assembly| |small molecule metabolic process| |protein-containing complex subunit organization| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp246|UM0011500 10μM R05 exp246]]|1.98| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
