This gene product belongs to the kainate family of glutamate receptors, which are composed of four subunits and function as ligand-activated ion channels. It is not certain if the subunit encoded by this gene is subject to RNA editing as the other 2 family members (GRIK1 and GRIK2). A Ser310Ala polymorphism has been associated with schizophrenia, and there are conflicting reports of its association with the pathogenesis of delirium tremens in alcoholics. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Receptor for glutamate that functions as ligand-gated ion channel in the central nervous system and plays an important role in excitatory synaptic transmission. L-glutamate acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter at many synapses in the central nervous system. The postsynaptic actions of Glu are mediated by a variety of receptors that are named according to their selective agonists. This receptor binds domoate > kainate >> L-glutamate = quisqualate >> AMPA = NMDA. |Lig chan-Glu bd| |ANF receptor| |SBP bac 3| |Lig chan| |adenylate cyclase inhibiting G protein-coupled glutamate receptor activity| |ligand-gated ion channel activity involved in regulation of presynaptic membrane potential| |kainate selective glutamate receptor complex| |kainate selective glutamate receptor activity| |regulation of presynaptic membrane potential| |adenylate cyclase-inhibiting G protein-coupled glutamate receptor signaling pathway| |ionotropic glutamate receptor activity| |negative regulation of synaptic transmission, glutamatergic| |G protein-coupled glutamate receptor signaling pathway| |glutamate receptor activity| |ionotropic glutamate receptor signaling pathway| |synaptic transmission, glutamatergic| |dendrite cytoplasm| |transmitter-gated ion channel activity involved in regulation of postsynaptic membrane potential| |glutamate receptor signaling pathway| |terminal bouton| |negative regulation of synaptic transmission| |regulation of synaptic transmission, glutamatergic| |presynaptic membrane| |adenylate cyclase-inhibiting G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway| |regulation of postsynaptic membrane potential| |perikaryon| |postsynaptic membrane| |adenylate cyclase-modulating G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway| |G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway, coupled to cyclic nucleotide second messenger| |axon| |glutamatergic synapse| |chemical synaptic transmission| |dendrite| |anterograde trans-synaptic signaling| |regulation of membrane potential| |trans-synaptic signaling| |modulation of chemical synaptic transmission| |regulation of trans-synaptic signaling| |synaptic signaling| |cell junction| |ion transmembrane transport| |cell-cell signaling| |transmembrane transport| |G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathway| |negative regulation of cell communication| |negative regulation of signaling| |ion transport| |integral component of plasma membrane| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found. ^Gene^Correlation^ |[[:human genes:h:hgc6.3|HGC6.3]]|0.402| Global Fraction of Cell Lines Where Essential: 0/739 ^Tissue^Fraction Of Cell Lines Where Essential^ |1290807.0|0/1| |909776.0|0/1| |bile duct|0/28| |blood|0/28| |bone|0/26| |breast|0/33| |central nervous system|0/56| |cervix|0/4| |colorectal|0/17| |esophagus|0/13| |fibroblast|0/1| |gastric|0/16| |kidney|0/21| |liver|0/20| |lung|0/75| |lymphocyte|0/16| |ovary|0/26| |pancreas|0/24| |peripheral nervous system|0/16| |plasma cell|0/15| |prostate|0/1| |skin|0/24| |soft tissue|0/9| |thyroid|0/2| |upper aerodigestive|0/22| |urinary tract|0/29| |uterus|0/5| == Essentiality in NALM6 == * **Essentiality Rank**: 8513 * **Expression level (log2 read counts)**: -1.72 {{:chemogenomics:nalm6 dist.png?nolink |}}
