This gene encodes an enzyme that N-methylates indoles such as tryptamine. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Read-through transcription also exists between this gene and the downstream FAM188B (family with sequence similarity 188, member B) gene. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2010]. * **UniProt Summary**: Functions as thioether S-methyltransferase and is active with a variety of thioethers and the corresponding selenium and tellurium compounds, including 3-methylthiopropionaldehyde, dimethyl selenide, dimethyl telluride, 2-methylthioethylamine, 2- methylthioethanol, methyl-n-propyl sulfide and diethyl sulfide. Plays an important role in the detoxification of selenium compounds (By similarity). Catalyzes the N-methylation of tryptamine and structurally related compounds. {ECO:0000250, ECO:0000269|PubMed:10552930}. |NNMT PNMT TEMT| |thioether S-methyltransferase activity| |S-adenosyl-L-methionine:beta-alanine N-methyltransferase activity| |amine N-methyltransferase activity| |amine metabolic process| |methylation| |response to toxic substance| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |R-DABN 8μM R03 exp111|1.98| |DABN racemic mixture R03 exp93|2.39| |Vinblastine 0.015μM R05 exp208|2.39| |Rotenone 2μM R00 exp33|2.9| |Nocodazole 0.1μM R03 exp94|2.93| |HMS-I1 10μM R06 exp256|3| |SB743921 0.001μM R05 exp244|3.76| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
