Growing evidence suggests that many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and some have potential as novel cancer and other disease biomarkers. This gene is one of the fifteen kallikrein subfamily members located in a cluster on chromosome 19. Its protein product is a protease present in seminal plasma. It is thought to function normally in the liquefaction of seminal coagulum, presumably by hydrolysis of the high molecular mass seminal vesicle protein. Serum level of this protein, called PSA in the clinical setting, is useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of prostatic carcinoma. Alternate splicing of this gene generates several transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Hydrolyzes semenogelin-1 thus leading to the liquefaction of the seminal coagulum. |Trypsin| |antimicrobial peptide production| |antibacterial peptide production| |hydrolase activity, acting on carbon-nitrogen (but not peptide) bonds, in linear amides| |antibacterial humoral response| |zymogen activation| |serine-type peptidase activity| |antimicrobial humoral immune response mediated by antimicrobial peptide| |endopeptidase activity| |secretory granule| |regulation of systemic arterial blood pressure| |negative regulation of angiogenesis| |negative regulation of blood vessel morphogenesis| |antimicrobial humoral response| |negative regulation of vasculature development| |protein processing| |serine-type endopeptidase activity| |production of molecular mediator of immune response| |regulation of blood pressure| |protein maturation| |regulation of angiogenesis| |regulation of vasculature development| |defense response to bacterium| |humoral immune response| |blood circulation| |circulatory system process| |protein-containing complex| |response to bacterium| |negative regulation of developmental process| |defense response to other organism| |regulation of anatomical structure morphogenesis| |negative regulation of multicellular organismal process| |proteolysis| |response to other organism| |response to external biotic stimulus| |response to biotic stimulus| |defense response| |extracellular space| |immune response| |extracellular region| |system process| |gene expression| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp518|RK-33 8μM R08 exp518]]|1.77| ^Gene^Correlation^ |[[:human genes:h:hgc6.3|HGC6.3]]|0.437| Global Fraction of Cell Lines Where Essential: 0/739 ^Tissue^Fraction Of Cell Lines Where Essential^ |1290807.0|0/1| |909776.0|0/1| |bile duct|0/28| |blood|0/28| |bone|0/26| |breast|0/33| |central nervous system|0/56| |cervix|0/4| |colorectal|0/17| |esophagus|0/13| |fibroblast|0/1| |gastric|0/16| |kidney|0/21| |liver|0/20| |lung|0/75| |lymphocyte|0/16| |ovary|0/26| |pancreas|0/24| |peripheral nervous system|0/16| |plasma cell|0/15| |prostate|0/1| |skin|0/24| |soft tissue|0/9| |thyroid|0/2| |upper aerodigestive|0/22| |urinary tract|0/29| |uterus|0/5| == Essentiality in NALM6 == * **Essentiality Rank**: 13056 * **Expression level (log2 read counts)**: -6.02 {{:chemogenomics:nalm6 dist.png?nolink |}}
