Mutations in this gene cause sialic acid storage diseases, including infantile sialic acid storage disorder and and Salla disease, an adult form. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **UniProt Summary**: Transports glucuronic acid and free sialic acid out of the lysosome after it is cleaved from sialoglycoconjugates undergoing degradation, this is required for normal CNS myelination. Mediates aspartate and glutamate membrane potential- dependent uptake into synaptic vesicles and synaptic-like microvesicles. Also functions as an electrogenic 2NO(3)(-)/H(+) cotransporter in the plasma membrane of salivary gland acinar cells, mediating the physiological nitrate efflux, 25% of the circulating nitrate ions is typically removed and secreted in saliva. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10581036, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11751519, ECO:0000269|PubMed:15510212, ECO:0000269|PubMed:21781115, ECO:0000269|PubMed:22778404}. |MFS 1| |sialic acid:proton symporter activity| |carbohydrate:proton symporter activity| |sialic acid transmembrane transporter activity| |sialic acid transport| |carbohydrate transmembrane transport| |synaptic vesicle membrane| |carbohydrate derivative transport| |carbohydrate transport| |amino acid transport| |proton transmembrane transport| |lysosome| |organic acid transport| |carboxylic acid transport| |lysosomal membrane| |monovalent inorganic cation transport| |organic anion transport| |cell junction| |inorganic cation transmembrane transport| |anion transport| |cation transmembrane transport| |inorganic ion transmembrane transport| |response to bacterium| |cation transport| |ion transmembrane transport| |transmembrane transport| |response to other organism| |response to external biotic stimulus| |response to biotic stimulus| |ion transport| |integral component of plasma membrane| |nitrogen compound transport| |membrane| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |Mitomycin-C 0.06μM R08 exp503|-2.41| |Atovaquone 15μM R08 exp451|-2.21| |Bafilomycin-A1 0.009μM R08 exp454|-1.71| |Clomiphene 4.4μM R02 exp68|1.91| |UM0011500 10μM R05 exp246|3.08| ^Gene^Correlation^ |HGC6.3|0.499| Global Fraction of Cell Lines Where Essential: 0/739 ^Tissue^Fraction Of Cell Lines Where Essential^ |1290807.0|0/1| |909776.0|0/1| |bile duct|0/28| |blood|0/28| |bone|0/26| |breast|0/33| |central nervous system|0/56| |cervix|0/4| |colorectal|0/17| |esophagus|0/13| |fibroblast|0/1| |gastric|0/16| |kidney|0/21| |liver|0/20| |lung|0/75| |lymphocyte|0/16| |ovary|0/26| |pancreas|0/24| |peripheral nervous system|0/16| |plasma cell|0/15| |prostate|0/1| |skin|0/24| |soft tissue|0/9| |thyroid|0/2| |upper aerodigestive|0/22| |urinary tract|0/29| |uterus|0/5| == Essentiality in NALM6 == * **Essentiality Rank**: 4597 * **Expression level (log2 read counts)**: 3.52
