This protein is expressed at high levels on the apical side of mature enterocytes in the small intestine, and appears to be the principal fatty acid transporter in enterocytes. Clinical studies suggest this gene as a candidate gene for the insulin resistance syndrome. Mutations in this gene have been associated with ichthyosis prematurity syndrome. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2010]. * **UniProt Summary**: Involved in translocation of long-chain fatty acids (LFCA) across the plasma membrane. Appears to be the principal fatty acid transporter in small intestinal enterocytes. Plays a role in the formation of the epidermal barrier. Required for fat absorption in early embryogenesis. Has acyl-CoA ligase activity for long-chain and very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs). Indirectly inhibits RPE65 via substrate competition and via production of VLCFA derivatives like lignoceroyl-CoA. Prevents light-induced degeneration of rods and cones (By similarity). {ECO:0000250}. |AMP-binding| |medium-chain fatty acid transport| |very long-chain fatty acid catabolic process| |very long-chain fatty acid-CoA ligase activity| |long-chain fatty acid import into cell| |lipid import into cell| |long-chain fatty acid transporter activity| |long-chain fatty acid-CoA ligase activity| |very long-chain fatty acid metabolic process| |brush border membrane| |long-chain fatty acid transport| |nucleotide binding| |microvillus| |fatty acid transport| |fatty acid catabolic process| |long-chain fatty acid metabolic process| |monocarboxylic acid catabolic process| |monocarboxylic acid transport| |cellular lipid catabolic process| |response to nutrient| |organic acid catabolic process| |carboxylic acid catabolic process| |carboxylic acid transport| |organic acid transport| |lipid transport| |lipid catabolic process| |lipid localization| |fatty acid metabolic process| |skin development| |small molecule catabolic process| |organic anion transport| |response to nutrient levels| |monocarboxylic acid metabolic process| |response to extracellular stimulus| |anion transport| |import into cell| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |endoplasmic reticulum membrane| |cellular lipid metabolic process| |oxoacid metabolic process| |organic acid metabolic process| |lipid metabolic process| |ion transport| |small molecule metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| |cellular catabolic process| |membrane| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |GSK-J4 1-1.25μM to day4 R07 exp363|-2.44| |GSK-J4 1μM R07 exp362|-2.16| |RS-1 10μM R08 exp519|-1.79| |Deguelin 0.05μM R02 exp69|2.1| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
