This integral membrane glycoprotein is responsible for the clearance of extracellular glycine during glycine-mediated neurotransmission. This protein is found in glycinergic axons and maintains a high presynaptic pool of neurotransmitter at glycinergic synapses. Mutations in this gene cause hyperekplexia; a heterogenous neurological disorder characterized by exaggerated startle responses and neonatal apnea. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2016]. * **UniProt Summary**: Terminates the action of glycine by its high affinity sodium-dependent reuptake into presynaptic terminals. May be responsible for the termination of neurotransmission at strychnine-sensitive glycinergic synapses. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10381548, ECO:0000269|PubMed:10606742, ECO:0000269|PubMed:9845349}. |SNF| |glycine import across plasma membrane| |glycine:sodium symporter activity| |synaptic transmission, glycinergic| |glycinergic synapse| |glycine transport| |amino acid import across plasma membrane| |amino acid import| |neurotransmitter uptake| |neutral amino acid transport| |L-alpha-amino acid transmembrane transport| |integral component of presynaptic membrane| |L-amino acid transport| |drug transmembrane transport| |amino acid transmembrane transport| |import across plasma membrane| |amino acid transport| |carboxylic acid transmembrane transport| |organic acid transmembrane transport| |drug transport| |neurotransmitter transport| |anion transmembrane transport| |carboxylic acid transport| |organic acid transport| |regulation of neurotransmitter levels| |anterograde trans-synaptic signaling| |chemical synaptic transmission| |trans-synaptic signaling| |organic anion transport| |synaptic signaling| |anion transport| |cation transmembrane transport| |import into cell| |cation transport| |ion transmembrane transport| |response to drug| |cell-cell signaling| |transmembrane transport| |ion transport| |nitrogen compound transport| \\ === CRISPR Data === No hits were found.
