The encoded protein is a transmembrane receptor that mediates the sodium-independent uptake of endogenous and xenobiotic compounds and plays a critical role in bile acid and bilirubin transport. Mutations in this gene are a cause of Rotor type hyperbilirubinemia. Alternative splicing of this gene and the use of alternative promoters results in transcript variants encoding different isoforms that differ in their tissue specificity. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2017]. * **UniProt Summary**: Mediates the Na(+)-independent uptake of organic anions such as 17-beta-glucuronosyl estradiol, taurocholate, triiodothyronine (T3), leukotriene C4, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), methotrexate and sulfobromophthalein (BSP). Involved in the clearance of bile acids and organic anions from the liver. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:22232210}. |Kazal 2| |MFS 1| |OATP| |organic anion transmembrane transporter activity| |bile acid transmembrane transporter activity| |sodium-independent organic anion transmembrane transporter activity| |sodium-independent organic anion transport| |bile acid and bile salt transport| |monocarboxylic acid transport| |organic hydroxy compound transport| |basolateral plasma membrane| |organic acid transport| |carboxylic acid transport| |lipid transport| |lipid localization| |organic anion transport| |anion transport| |transmembrane transport| |ion transport| |integral component of plasma membrane| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |KU-0063794 3.8μM R02 exp71|1.95| |ETC-159 50μM R08 exp480|1.97| ^Gene^Correlation^ |RRM1|0.432| Global Fraction of Cell Lines Where Essential: 0/739 ^Tissue^Fraction Of Cell Lines Where Essential^ |1290807.0|0/1| |909776.0|0/1| |bile duct|0/28| |blood|0/28| |bone|0/26| |breast|0/33| |central nervous system|0/56| |cervix|0/4| |colorectal|0/17| |esophagus|0/13| |fibroblast|0/1| |gastric|0/16| |kidney|0/21| |liver|0/20| |lung|0/75| |lymphocyte|0/16| |ovary|0/26| |pancreas|0/24| |peripheral nervous system|0/16| |plasma cell|0/15| |prostate|0/1| |skin|0/24| |soft tissue|0/9| |thyroid|0/2| |upper aerodigestive|0/22| |urinary tract|0/29| |uterus|0/5| == Essentiality in NALM6 == * **Essentiality Rank**: 14321 * **Expression level (log2 read counts)**: -3.7
