Serves as receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates. Is thought to mediate docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through binding to nucleoporin and the complex is subsequently translocated through the pore by an energy requiring, Ran-dependent mechanism. At the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC, Ran binds to the importin, the importin/substrate complex dissociates and importin is re-exported from the nucleus to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran. The directionality of nuclear import is thought to be conferred by an asymmetric distribution of the GTP- and GDP-bound forms of Ran between the cytoplasm and nucleus (By similarity). {ECO:0000250}. |IBN N| |nuclear import signal receptor activity| |nuclear localization sequence binding| |Ran GTPase binding| |protein import into nucleus| |import into nucleus| |protein import| |protein localization to nucleus| |nucleocytoplasmic transport| |nuclear transport| |establishment of protein localization to organelle| |protein localization to organelle| |intracellular protein transport| |protein transport| |intracellular transport| |peptide transport| |amide transport| |cellular protein localization| |cellular macromolecule localization| |establishment of protein localization| |establishment of localization in cell| |nitrogen compound transport| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp443|SNS-032 15μM R08 exp443]]|-1.78| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
