The genes encoding these microtubule constituents belong to the tubulin superfamily, which is composed of six distinct families. Genes from the alpha, beta and gamma tubulin families are found in all eukaryotes. The alpha and beta tubulins represent the major components of microtubules, while gamma tubulin plays a critical role in the nucleation of microtubule assembly. There are multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes, which are highly conserved among species. This gene encodes alpha tubulin and is highly similar to the mouse and rat Tuba1 genes. Northern blot studies have shown that the gene expression is predominantly found in morphologically differentiated neurologic cells. This gene is one of three alpha-tubulin genes in a cluster on chromosome 12q. Mutations in this gene cause lissencephaly type 3 (LIS3) - a neurological condition characterized by microcephaly, intellectual disability, and early-onset epilepsy caused by defective neuronal migration. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2017]. * **UniProt Summary**: Tubulin is the major constituent of microtubules. It binds two moles of GTP, one at an exchangeable site on the beta chain and one at a non-exchangeable site on the alpha chain. |Tubulin C| |Tubulin| |myelin sheath| |cytoplasmic microtubule| |cytoplasmic ribonucleoprotein granule| |neuromuscular junction| |ciliary basal body-plasma membrane docking| |structural constituent of cytoskeleton| |recycling endosome| |G2/M transition of mitotic cell cycle| |cell cycle G2/M phase transition| |microtubule cytoskeleton| |organelle localization by membrane tethering| |cytoskeleton-dependent intracellular transport| |membrane docking| |structural molecule activity| |regulation of G2/M transition of mitotic cell cycle| |regulation of cell cycle G2/M phase transition| |regulation of synapse organization| |membrane raft| |regulation of synapse structure or activity| |protein domain specific binding| |mitotic cell cycle phase transition| |cell cycle phase transition| |microtubule| |GTPase activity| |cilium assembly| |cilium organization| |GTP binding| |regulation of mitotic cell cycle phase transition| |plasma membrane bounded cell projection assembly| |regulation of cell cycle phase transition| |cell projection assembly| |microtubule cytoskeleton organization| |cell division| |organelle localization| |mitotic cell cycle process| |regulation of mitotic cell cycle| |microtubule-based process| |mitotic cell cycle| |regulation of cell cycle process| |organelle assembly| |cell cycle process| |cytoskeleton organization| |plasma membrane bounded cell projection organization| |cell projection organization| |regulation of cell cycle| |cell cycle| |intracellular transport| |establishment of localization in cell| \\ === CRISPR Data === ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp246|UM0011500 10μM R05 exp246]]|1.87| No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics.
