This gene encodes the first enzyme which is found in the cytosol and uses S-adenosyl-L-methionine as the methyl donor. In the mammalian brain, the neurotransmitter activity of histamine is controlled by N(tau)-methylation as diamine oxidase is not found in the central nervous system. A common genetic polymorphism affects the activity levels of this gene product in red blood cells. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants that encode different proteins have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]. * **<color #00a2e8>UniProt Summary</color>**: Inactivates histamine by N-methylation. Plays an important role in degrading histamine and in regulating the airway response to histamine. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:26206890}. <button type='primary' size='sm' modal='Pfam_Domains'>Pfam Domains</button> <button type='primary' size='sm' modal='GO_terms'>GO Terms</button> <modal id='Pfam_Domains' size='lg' title='Pfam Domains'> |Methyltransf 12| </modal> <modal id='GO_terms' size='lg' title='GO Terms'> |histamine N-methyltransferase activity| |histamine catabolic process| |histamine metabolic process| |imidazole-containing compound catabolic process| |histidine catabolic process| |histidine metabolic process| |response to tumor cell| |imidazole-containing compound metabolic process| |cellular biogenic amine catabolic process| |amine catabolic process| |neurotransmitter catabolic process| |hyperosmotic response| |response to immobilization stress| |aromatic amino acid family catabolic process| |aromatic amino acid family metabolic process| |respiratory gaseous exchange by respiratory system| |response to amine| |response to cocaine| |cellular biogenic amine metabolic process| |cellular amine metabolic process| |amine metabolic process| |response to osmotic stress| |response to anesthetic| |neurotransmitter metabolic process| |alpha-amino acid catabolic process| |response to alkaloid| |cellular amino acid catabolic process| |response to glucocorticoid| |response to corticosteroid| |response to ammonium ion| |ammonium ion metabolic process| |response to interleukin-1| |alpha-amino acid metabolic process| |carboxylic acid catabolic process| |organic acid catabolic process| |response to xenobiotic stimulus| |cellular amino acid metabolic process| |methylation| |neuron projection| |response to steroid hormone| |regulation of neurotransmitter levels| |heterocycle catabolic process| |cellular nitrogen compound catabolic process| |small molecule catabolic process| |aromatic compound catabolic process| |organic cyclic compound catabolic process| |brain development| |head development| |response to lipid| |carboxylic acid metabolic process| |response to hormone| |response to organic cyclic compound| |central nervous system development| |response to organonitrogen compound| |oxoacid metabolic process| |response to drug| |organic acid metabolic process| |organonitrogen compound catabolic process| |response to nitrogen compound| |response to cytokine| |response to abiotic stimulus| |response to biotic stimulus| |response to endogenous stimulus| |response to oxygen-containing compound| |small molecule metabolic process| |organic substance catabolic process| |cellular catabolic process| </modal> \\ === CRISPR Data === <button type='primary' size='small' modal='Compound_Hit'>Compound Hit</button> <button type='default' size='small' modal='Most_Correlated_Genes'>Most Correlated Genes in Chemogenomics</button> <button type='primary' size='small' modal='Essential_Avana'>Tissues where Essential in the Avana Dataset (DepMap 20Q1)</button> <modal id='Compound_Hit' size='lg' title='Compound Hit'> ^Screen^Score^ |[[:results:exp8|Brefeldin A 0.02μM R00 exp8]]|2.15| </modal> <modal id='Most_Correlated_Genes' size='lg' title='Most Correlated Genes in Chemogenomics'> No correlation found to any other genes in chemogenomics. </modal> <modal id='Essential_Avana' size='lg' title='Tissues where Essential in the Avana Dataset (DepMap 20Q1)'> Global Fraction of Cell Lines Where Essential: 0/739 ^Tissue^Fraction Of Cell Lines Where Essential^ |1290807.0|0/1| |909776.0|0/1| |bile duct|0/28| |blood|0/28| |bone|0/26| |breast|0/33| |central nervous system|0/56| |cervix|0/4| |colorectal|0/17| |esophagus|0/13| |fibroblast|0/1| |gastric|0/16| |kidney|0/21| |liver|0/20| |lung|0/75| |lymphocyte|0/16| |ovary|0/26| |pancreas|0/24| |peripheral nervous system|0/16| |plasma cell|0/15| |prostate|0/1| |skin|0/24| |soft tissue|0/9| |thyroid|0/2| |upper aerodigestive|0/22| |urinary tract|0/29| |uterus|0/5| </modal> == Essentiality in NALM6 == * **<color #00a2e8>Essentiality Rank</color>**: 12393 * **<color #00a2e8>Expression level (log2 read counts)</color>**: 1.36 <button type='primary' size='small' modal='Dist_expr'>Expression Distribution</button> <modal id='Dist_expr' size='lg' title='HNMT Expression in NALM6 Cells: 1.36'> {{:chemogenomics:nalm6 dist.png?nolink |}} </modal> Last modified: 2025/12/10 20:19by 127.0.0.1
