Gene Information
  • Official Symbol: ASMT
  • Official Name: acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase
  • Aliases and Previous Symbols: N/A
  • Entrez ID: 438
  • UniProt: P46597
  • Interactions: BioGRID

  • OMIM: Open OMIM
Function Summary
  • Entrez Summary: This gene belongs to the methyltransferase superfamily, and is located in the pseudoautosomal region (PAR) at the end of the short arms of the X and Y chromosomes. The encoded enzyme catalyzes the final reaction in the synthesis of melatonin, and is abundant in the pineal gland. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been noted for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2010].
  • UniProt Summary: Isoform 1 catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group onto N-acetylserotonin, producing melatonin (N-acetyl-5- methoxytryptamine). Isoform 2 and isoform 3 lack enzyme activity. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:22775292}.
